Pregnancy Danger Signs

This page provides information on danger signs for pregnant women. Any pregnant woman with danger signs MUST be referred to nearest health facility for urgent medical attention.


  • Any vaginal bleeding (enough to fully soak a sanitary pad or bleed through clothing)
  • Any abdominal pain
  • Swollen hands and face
  • Fits/convulsions
  • Headache with or without blurred vision
  • Fever
  • Fast or difficult breathing: the feeling that you cannot catch your breath even if you are at rest. (Fast or difficult breathing after exertion is normal, but you should be able to catch your breath within a few minutes of resting)
  • A pregnant woman who is very pale and tired
  • A woman who breaks the waters
  • Excessive, reduced or no fetal movement
